The Concerto Orchestra
Giving emerging soloists a platform to perform
History
The Concerto Orchestra was formed up in 2004 by Tom Horn. The purpose of the orchestra was to give students at the University of Southampton the opportunity to perform concertos with an orchestra during public lunchtime concerts at the Tuner Sims Concert Hall. In 2006 Craig Lawton took over the running of the orchestra and the orchestra continued to flourish.
The Concerto Orchestra acted as an aid to performers in their final recital examinations and also as a platform for the performances of newly composed music.
After the departure of Craig Lawton as conductor the orchestra was disbanded in October 2007. A year later the orchestra has been revived and rebranded and is ready to begin performing with up and coming soloists. The Concerto Orchestra is now part of the Charity Symphony Orchestra which gives scope to perform large scale concerto works.
The new orchestra is based at Christ Church Freemantle in Southampton and will perform concerts every two months from October to July.
If you have a concerto ready for performance, or even if you would like to have a dry run in a rehearsal situation, please check the Perform with us section.
Perform with us
"One should always take the opportunity to play in public! Look at it as 'public practice!'" - David Owen Norris, Lecturer, Performer, Broadcaster.
Whether you have a concerto ready to perform or you would just like the opportunity to practice a concerto in preparation for a performance, The Concerto Orchestra can give you the platform for performance!
We are formed of accomplished musicians that have many years experience in performing in a variety of ensembles all over the country and beyond. The Concerto Orchestra can perform concertos scored for double wind and brass with small percussion and strings. For larger scale works our parent orchestra the Charity Symphony Orchestra is on hand to work with.
If you are interested in performing or practising with The Concerto Orchestra please send us details of the work you'd like to perform including the edition, scoring and timings. We will then get back to you as soon as possible.
The Concerto Orchestra is suited for small scale works performed at a smaller venue. If you would like to be considered as a soloist in the programme of a Charity Symphony Orchestra concert please send us a biography and if possible a recording of yourself playing.
