The Charity Symphony Orchestra warmly invites women's voices to join us for our 20th Anniversary Concert this September in Romsey Abbey in a performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.3. A work of gigantic proportions and forces, it rarely makes an appearance due to its length and orchestral demands.
The divisi chorus of voices is used in the penultimate movement. "Es sungen drei Engel", is one of Mahler's Das Knaben Wunderhorn songs, (whose text itself is loosely based on a 17th-century church hymn).
If you are interested in joining us, please read the details below and submit the expression of interest form.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Saturday 5th September, 7pm (note earlier start time), Romsey Abbey
Rehearsal from 1315 to 1430 TBC
The chorus sings in the 5th movement which will likely be towards 8.30/45pm. It may not be possible to facilitate the choir 'entering' at a later time in the concert so being in the Abbey from the beginning of the concert is the likely outcome.
The orchestra will only have one other rehearsal and therefore also for the choir on Saturday 18th July at Cantell Secondary School in Southampton for which singers would be required from c.1030-11.45.
Because of the nature of this project, the musical complexities and shortness of time, there are elements we, and interested singers must take into consideration before a place is accepted
Ideally you will be a reader of music as there will be little to no 'teaching' time.
We would like you to be comfortable with the pronunciation of the German texts of the movement. (you will find the score and a link to a recording below to aid your decision).
It is fair on all involved that, where possible, that both the July and concert day rehearsals are attended.
If a place to sing is available to you and your circumstances change before July or September, you must let us know at your earliest convenience so we can adjust the balance if required.
